Southeast Asian rubber will enter the era of "the three countries are the first five countries"

Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia are the top three producers of natural rubber in the world, and natural rubber production in the three countries accounts for more than 70% of the world. As a traditional agricultural country, Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos have the same favorable conditions in developing the rubber industry.
As early as 2004, rubber became the second largest export agricultural product in Vietnam after rice. Judging from the current development situation, the rubber industry in Vietnam has developed smoothly. The export volume, output and planting area of natural rubber rank third, fifth and sixth respectively in the world.
In 2011, Vietnam exported 816,000 tons of natural rubber, an increase of 8% year-on-year and a foreign exchange of US$1.9 billion. Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture expects Vietnam's rubber exports to reach 930,000 tons this year, up 14% from last year. In addition to increasing planting area, improving technology and management level, Vietnam also pays attention to strengthening international cooperation in the development of the rubber industry and learning advanced experience from other countries.
The Philippines has a history of planting commercial rubber for more than 100 years. With the economic benefits and increasing government attention, the rubber planting area in the Philippines has increased from 110,000 hectares in 2007 to 160,000 hectares in 2011, an average annual increase of 9.8%. In 2011, the Philippines produced a total of 425,000 tons of natural rubber, 90% of which was exported.
For the long-term development considerations, the Philippine Department of Agriculture, the Philippine Rubber Industry Association, the relevant local governments of the Philippines and foreign investors jointly formulated the “15-year development plan for the natural rubber industry” in 2006, and plans to expand the rubber planting area to 100 by 2016. Ten thousand hectares will increase rubber production from the current 1 ton / ha to 2 tons / hectare, and strive to earn 960 million US dollars in natural rubber exports by 2020.
According to data from the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce, in 2011, Cambodia’s national rubber planting area reached 181,000 hectares, rubber exports were 47,000 tons, and foreign exchange earned 200 million US dollars. In the first quarter of this year, exports were 12,800 tons, an increase of 8% year-on-year.
In recent years, Cambodia has also accelerated the pace of development of the rubber industry. In 2011 alone, it approved 20 investment projects with a total investment of US$675 million. According to the plan, the rubber planting area in Cambodia is expected to increase to 200,000 hectares this year and increase to 250,000 hectares by 2015. By 2020, the rubber planting area will reach 300,000 hectares, and the annual output will reach 290,000 tons.
In 2010-2011, Myanmar's rubber planting area exceeded 400,000 acres and rubber production reached 87,000 tons. To further develop the rubber industry, the Myanmar government has formulated a 30-year development plan.
Although Laos' rubber industry is relatively backward in development, it has developed rapidly in recent years and its prospects are promising. In 2008, the natural rubber planting area in Laos was 140,000 hectares, and in 2010 it has expanded to 248,800 hectares.
In summary, in the future, Southeast Asia, which is the main rubber production base in the world, will enter the era of “three countries take the lead and the five countries will start together” and will have an important and far-reaching impact on the world rubber market.
